Number of Dist. 5 hopefuls grows to six

The number of candidates interested in filling the District 5 vacancy on the Grady County Board of Education caused by the departure of Scott Higginbotham has now grown to six.
Two additional candidates have added their names to the field of six candidates, and the deadline to submit letters of interest does not end until 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 1.
Cairo businessman Carter Ausley and retired educator Joyce Lee Herndon have made their intentions known in addition to John White, Jim Ellis, Terry Prince, and the Rev. Dr. Ron McCaskill.
Higginbotham qualified to run for mayor of Cairo and upon doing so vacated his post on the school board.
The majority of the board will now appoint a candidate to fill the remainder of Higginbotham’s term, which would have expired Dec. 31, 2014.
The school board will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 8 behind closed doors to discuss the field of applicants.
Candidates must be a resident of District 5 and should submit letters by mail or in person to the school system central office at 122 North Broad Street, Cairo, GA 39828.
