Qualifying opens Monday morning

Qualifying for upcoming municipal elections in Cairo opens Monday and so far only two veteran councilmen have announced their plans to seek reelection.
Mayor Pro Tem Ernest Cloud recently announced he would seek his eighth term on the Cairo city council and Councilman James H. (Jimmy) Douglas said he would qualify to run for his third term.
Also up for reelection this fall is Mayor Richard VanLandingham. The mayor is still contemplating his future plans.
Qualifying opens Monday, Aug. 26 at 8:30 a.m. and will end on Friday, Aug. 30 at 4:30 p.m. The candidate qualifying will take place at Cairo City Hall, 119 North Broad Street.
The qualifying fee for mayor is $244.80 and for councilman it is $219.60.
The municipal election will be conducted on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013 and all voting will take place at the Grady County Agri-Center.
Qualifying also takes place in Whigham next week. The mayor and all council posts are up for election.
The qualifying fee for Whigham mayor is $144 and for the city council is $36.
