Five Star Credit Union to construct new branch here

Five Star Credit Union got the green light from the Cairo City Council Monday night to move forward with the construction of a new branch here on property located between U.S. Highway 84 and First Avenue N.E. near 3 Squares Diner.
Five Star officials petitioned the city to abandon a 20-foot wide right-of-way on the eastern boundary of the credit union’s property to prevent future development of the land as a street or alley.
Cairo City Manager Chris Addleton told city councilmen Monday he could not see the need to ever develop a street or alley on the property, but he recommended maintaining the strip as a utility easement.
“We have utility infrastructure there we need to maintain,” Addleton said.
City Attorney Thomas L. Lehman said that although a plat may exist that designates the strip as a road or alley it is not wide enough to develop it as such.
“I think you can make the declaration that it will be retained as a utility easement with any plans for an alley or street to be abandoned,” Lehman said.
Addleton questioned if the property in question was in fact a portion of 10th Street N.E., but Lehman said it was never dedicated as a street.
The council instructed Lehman to prepare the necessary deeds and utility easement.
Plans submitted to the city show a new branch facility that will face U.S. 84 and include two drive-up teller lanes.
Addleton expects permits to be purchased shortly and work to begin soon after that.
