New law requires all metal recyclers register with the county sheriff

Grady County Sheriff Harry Young said he wants to alert all businesses here that work with recycled metals that a new state law requires them to register with the sheriff’s office.
The new law goes into effect July 1, 2012, and states that all secondary metal recyclers who purchase regulated metal property must register with their local Sheriff’s Office.
Such businesses will then be entered into a statewide data base searchable by all law enforcement agencies.
Sheriff Young said metal recyclers already operating in Grady County will have until July 20, 2012, to register and comply with the new law. Such registration is valid for 12 months.
In addition to submitting a valid driver’s license or photo ID, registrants must pay a $200 registration fee.
Registration must be handled in person with registrants required to complete a portion of the documents in the presence of a sheriff’s office representative.
