Local pair prepare for pharmacy school

PHARMACIST DREW PYRZ, left, is working with Dana Brock and Katie Harvey this summer, as they prepare to enter pharmacy school.

They worked together as leaders in high school and three years later they are working together again, this time on the same career path and at the same business, Center Drugs.
Katie Harvey and Dana Brock will each enter pharmacy school this fall and are getting first hand experience in the field, thanks to Shanda and Drew Pyrz, husband and wife pharmacists and owners of Center Drugs.
Katie, 21, and Dana, 20, are assisting behind the pharmacy counter, jobs they have held at Center Drugs off and on since 2010.
As of this fall, they will begin their official pharmacy training. Katie, 21, who completed her undergraduate studies at Valdosta State University, will study pharmacy at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Dana, 20, finished her undergraduate work at University of Georgia and will stay at UGA for her pharmacy degree.
“Pharmacy was attractive to me, because it’s a very flexible field to work in. You still get a lot of interaction with the public, or you can work in a hospital setting. The ever changing field keeps it exciting,” says Dana Brock. An interest in health and healthy living also attracted Brock to pharmacy.
Katie Harvey says, “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I am anxious to know how medications affect you and help you.”
Dana and Katie were Top Ten seniors and 2009 honor graduates of Cairo High School where Dana was class salutatorian. Their senior year, Katie served as Student Council president, and Dana was vice president.
They plan to graduate from pharmacy school in 2016.
Katie is the daughter of Cindy and Billy Joe Harvey of Cairo; and Dana is the daughter of Kim and Earl Brock of Whigham.
