Georgia’s First Lady honors the Top Ten

GEORGIA FIRST LADY Sandra Deal was the keynote speaker at the 25th annual Top Ten Banquet sponsored by the Cairo Rotary Club and held Tuesday night at the Cairo High School cafeteria.

The Cairo Rotary Club celebrated 25 years of honoring Cairo High School’s Top Ten students of each grade Tuesday night with a special keynote speaker, Georgia’s First Lady Sandra Deal.
Mrs. Deal congratulated the 40 students who achieved academic success this year and urged them to continue their work. She also encouraged the students to find joy in whatever work they do, seek other outlets in addition to their studies such as sports or the arts and be kind.
The Gainesville resident spoke fondly of CHS Principal David McCurry who grew up in Gainesville. “David was in and out of my house,” said Mrs. Deal of Mr. McCurry during his own high school years. She said she was proud to see the success he had made of his life.
Mrs. Deal then presented each student with his or her Top Ten certificate of honor as Rotary Club President Sam Carnline of Stallings Motors called each to the front.
The students and two guests were treated to a catered meal at the banquet held at Cairo High School’s cafeteria. An engraved plaque bearing each student’s name was presented to Mr. McCurry by the Rotary Club and will hang in the high school’s front lobby next school year.
Several local businesses and individuals in Cairo Rotary helped the club sponsor the banquet: Blough Tech, Inc.; Cairo Eye Care; Cairo Best Western; Capital City Bank; Citizens Bank; Grady Finance Co.; Thomas L. Lehman, attorney; Richter and Company; Grady County Sheriff’ Harry Young; South Georgia Tractor, Inc.; South Georgia Spine and Joint Center; Southern Insurance; Stallings Motors; Thomas Chevrolet of Cairo; and United National Bank.
Designs by Craig provided floral arrangements and decorations; Monrovia Growers provided decorative trees; and The Cairo Messenger provided the program.
