Five show interest in school board seat
Five residents of Grady County District 3 have expressed interest in serving out the unexpired term of former Board of Education member Byron Puckett, who recently resigned.
Grady County School Superintendent Dr. Tommy Pharis confirmed that letters of interest from five candidates have been submitted to the board of education.
School Board Chairman Teresa Gee Harris has set a deadline for submissions of Monday, Feb. 13.
Chairman Harris and Vice Chairman Drew Pyrz said following Puckett’s resignation that they would prefer to name a replacement who would be interested in serving on the board for the 10 months remaining on Puckett’s term, rather than appoint someone who would qualify for and seek election to a four-year term.
School officials say to do otherwise would put the board in the position of giving an individual the power of incumbency, albeit on the basis of a short term.
Any resident of District 3 interested in serving on the school board is asked to submit a letter of interest in a sealed envelope addressed to Chairman Harris and mail it to or drop it off at 122 N. Broad Street, Cairo, GA 39828.
Dr. Pharis says the board will likely take up the issue of naming a replacement for Puckett at its February meeting on Feb. 14.
