84% of taxes are collected

Large checks from mortgage companies were received by Grady County Tax Commissioner Phyllis Gainous and those drove up tax collections through Tuesday of this week to 84 percent.
“We got them in on Thursday and worked Thursday and wrapped up Friday posting them all,” Mrs. Gainous said.
The tax commissioner projects by Jan. 20, 2012, over 90 percent of the taxes due will be paid. A total of $13,095,542.09 was billed in county, school, city of Cairo and state ad valorem taxes.
Mrs. Gainous has contracts with 123 taxpayers to pay their taxes in installments.
A one percent interest charge is added to all taxes not paid by the Dec. 20 deadline, and once taxes are 90 days past due a 10 percent penalty is added.
