A blaze Monday nearly destroyed a Cairo home, but its two occupants managed to escape unharmed.
At 1:48 p.m. Monday, 911 operators received a report of a house fire at 516 3rd St. NW. The Cairo Fire Department responded to the scene with two engines “just under five minutes later,” Cairo Fire Chief Jim Fielding said.
Cairo volunteer firefighters arrived with a third engine minutes later.
Firefighters brought the flames “under control” within 30 minutes of arrival, Fielding said.
The Red Cross is assisting the burned home’s residents with food, shelter, clothing, medicine and other essentials
The precise cause of the fire is currently unknown, but Fielding said it was likely “accidental.” An investigation begins today. Fielding said investigators let the site “cool down” a day before beginning their inquiry.
Per protocol, city of Cairo utilities workers cut power to the area surrounding the blaze for safety.
