Application deadline for library post is Monday

The process of selecting a new director for Roddenbery Memorial Library is proceeding, according to Library Trustee Lois Duncan, who also serves as trustee liaison on the library director search committee.
Longtime Library Director Alan Kaye vacated the directorship Oct. 1, and since that date Assistant Library Director Janet Boudet has served as the interim director.
Lois Duncan says that in keeping with past director searches, a search committee was formed in December by the library’s board of trustees.
“We tried to get a good representation of the community,” Mrs. Duncan said.
The search committee is being chaired by retired public school librarian Susan Perkins. Other members of the search committee include Ann Wooten, Dan Broome, Larry Rawlins, Renee G. Theophille, Howard Thrower III and Donna Powell.
According to Mrs. Duncan, the search committee is grading each of the applicants based on a point system, and they will narrow the field down to the top finalists and present those applications to the board of trustees.
It will be the board of trustees that interviews the top candidates and make a final selection, according to the library trustee.
The search committee is accepting applications through next Monday, Feb. 28. To date, 16 applications have been received.
The Roddenbery Memorial Library position was advertised everywhere the notice could be posted for “free,” according to Mrs. Duncan.
“The library just doesn’t have the funds to advertise anywhere else. We concentrated on the southeastern states,” she said.
Mrs. Duncan anticipates the search committee receiving additional applications prior to Monday’s cutoff.
The next regular meeting of the library trustees will be on Monday, March 14, and Mrs. Duncan anticipates the trustees will discuss the hiring of a director. She said the next meeting of the search committee had not yet been scheduled.
“We certainly hope to have someone in place prior to the start of our new fiscal year,” Mrs. Duncan said.
The library’s fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30.
Thomas L. Lehman, chairman of the library board of trustees, was unavailable for comment Tuesday.
