City employees’ wallets will be a little fatter Jan. 1

City of Cairo employees will have a little extra spending money come January when all city workers will receive a two percent cost-of-living raise.
Cairo city councilmen did not discuss the raise at the regular council meeting last week, but City Manager Chris Addleton emailed them to advise them of his recommendation to proceed with paying the additional salary effective Jan. 1, 2011.
The council budgeted two percent in the 2010-2011 operating budget, but the discussion by the council at that time was to review the city’s finances at midyear and make an adjustment at that time, if possible.
Approximately $65,000 will be split by the 152 full-time city employees.
Addleton notes that city workers have not had an increase in pay since July 2008.
“We looked at the latest financial report. We had a good audit and we looked at the all the numbers, and I recommended that we go ahead with it,” the city manager said.
Addleton said that the feedback from the members of the council had been positive.
