CHS Alumni Band to put in practice time Sunday

The response to the formation of a Cairo High School alumni band has been nothing short of OVERWHELMING!
Currently, membership in the alumni band is approaching 200, about as many as are members of 2010 Syrupmaker marching band. “We’re real excited,” said former band member and current “band mom,” Connie Godwin Rykard.
Rykard is one of three former CHS band members in charge of organizing the alumni band. “We had a lot call (to join) at the end of last week,” she added.
The CHS alumni band will practice this Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. in the Cairo High School band room. Current CHS band members will be on board at the first practice to offer assistance.
Rykard encourages all former band members who are interested to register by Sept. 26, the deadline for shirt orders. Those who register online at www.syrupmakeralumniband.com will be prompted for name, year graduated, instrument played and shirt size. Shirts are $10.
Prospective members can also call Rykard at 377-3006 to register or to learn more about plans for the band’s upcoming performance.
Just a few short months ago, Rykard, Wanda Powe Fowler and Martha Hester Prince began to survey former band members to determine the level of interest in forming an alumni band.
Later, a web site was established for the purpose of recruiting former band members to join the Syrupmaker marching band in the band’s trademark rendition of the  “Battle Hymn” during the Oct. 8 halftime show at West Thomas Stadium.
If the Syrupmaker band stretches from end zone to end zone during that historic night in October, there’s no telling what Rykard and company may be planning for an encore. Stay tuned!
