Historical Society looks to boost membership

The Grady County Historical Society has launched a membership drive in hopes of increasing the ranks of the organization.
Historical Society officials say that membership is not expensive, but more than anything it indicates support for the local effort to learn about and preserve the heritage of our community.
The museum building and annex have been renovated and the society is now ready to begin work on expanding the museum’s displays and collection, as well as to make it more accessible to the community.
The Historical Society meets eight regularly scheduled meetings a year and meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month.
The next meeting is set for Tuesday, Sept. 14, and the program will be “Myths, Legends and True Stories.” A panel of story tellers will present the program and society officers are encouraging local resident to share their unique stories or legends with the group.
Regular monthly meetings will now be held in the Cairo City Council chambers located in the Museum Annex, which is the former Roddenbery Hardware building.
Special field trips to points of interest around the community are also being planned.
The society has adopted a promotional theme, “This area was a good place to live in the past, a great place to live now, and will be a better place to live in the future.”
As an added incentive to join, new members will be given a 10-percent discount for any item purchased from the museum gift shop.
The cost of membership is: Individuals – $15 annually; Couples – $25; Business/Organization – $25; and Individual Lifetime memberships are $100.
To join send your check to: Grady County Historical Society, P.O. Box 586, Cairo, GA 39828.
Historical Society officials ask for you to include your  name or the name of your business  or organization as well as your mailing and email addresses and telephone contact information.
