Alumni band is organizing
Former Syrupmaker band members who dream of taking the field one more time will be afforded the opportunity to join current band members during a halftime performance this season. Syrupmaker band alumni will join the Syrupmaker band on the field for the “Battle Hymn” during the Oct. 8 football game at West Thomas stadium.
“Ever since I came to Cairo High School 12 years ago, people have been saying we ought to have an alumni band,” says CHS Band Director Johnny Folsom.
“Finally, our ‘band mom,’ Connie Godwin Rykard, is taking the bull by the horns (to organize the group). She is working with Wanda Powe Fowler and Martha Hester Prince and they are putting the details together,” says the Syrupmaker band chief.
“And the plan is, for as many of them who can make it to come in on that Thursday night ‘white shoe’ before that Oct. 8 game and practice with us,” says Folsom. At a predesignated time, the alumni band members will run out on the field and join the Syrupmaker band for its popular rendition of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Syrupmaker alumni band members who are interested in participating in the event should contact Mrs. Rykard at 229-377-3006.
