Holiday marred by death of local resident

A young Cairo man was killed in a car accident and a Florida driver is charged with his death and driving under the influence (DUI) while the Georgia State Patrol continues its investigation. The case was turned over to the GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
Miguel Encina-Cornado, 24, was killed in the single vehicle accident on Highway 111 South Thursday evening at 7 o’clock. Encina-Cornado was a passenger in a 2000 Dodge Stratus.
The driver of the car, Rafael Zuniga, also 24, from Quincy, Fla., was driving south on 111 when he lost control of the Stratus, crossed over the north bound lane and into a ditch before the passenger side of the car crashed into a tree.
Zuniga and Encina-Cornado were trapped in the car by the force of the crash. Two other male passengers were not trapped.
Zuniga was air lifted to South East Medical Center in Dothan, Ala., for treatment of his injuries. Two other passengers were taken by EMS to Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville. Encina-Cornado was dead at the scene.
According to the GSP report on the incident, Zuniga is charged with DUI, failure to maintain lane, driving while unlicensed, and homicide by vehicle in the first degree.
