An impromptu groundbreaking took place Thursday as company officials traveled to Grady County to meet with the contractor and representatives of the Grady County Joint Development Authority.
Crews began clearing the construction site two weeks ago, and Fortson Turner of Turner Furniture Company said that he hopes the new store will be completed by next June.
“That is the goal,” Turner said Thursday. He and his brother, Austin, and father, Wright, were also here for the groundbreaking.
The new store is being constructed by SC Barker Construction of Valdosta.
“We are looking forward to many years of doing business out of these two stores,” Fortson Turner said last week.
The Turners are targeting not only the local market, but also customers in the Tallahassee and Thomasville markets through their Beachton store.
The Turners are building a new 40,800 square foot facility to house the company’s newest Turner’s Fine Furniture location. The new store will be located on U.S. 319 South in Beachton. Next door is the former Plantation Parkway Sports Complex, where the Turners plan to open a Turner’s Budget Furniture facility of approximately 25,000 square feet.
“It is great that Turner Furniture Company has decided to invest in Grady County. We are fortunate the Turner family selected the Beachton area for their new stores. We envision the Beachton area as the county’s next retail hub and Turner’s will be the anchor for future development in the southern section of the county. The Turner’s stores will enhance the retail opportunities for us in Beachton,” said Brian Marlowe, executive director of the Grady County Joint Development Authority.
With the new location here, Turner’s will have four Fine Furniture locations and five Budget Furniture locations in southwest Georgia.
Turner Furniture Company was established in 1915 by the late M.W. Turner Sr. of Pelham.
The company is now led by the fourth generation of the Turner family. The company was named the 2009 Georgia Family Business of the Year in the category of medium businesses by the Cox Family Business Center at Kennesaw State University.
Turner Furniture is based in Tifton.
