Qualifying for city elections ends Friday

James H. (Jimmy) Douglas qualifies for re-election to the Cairo city council as City Clerk Carolyn Lee looks on.

Cairo City Councilman James H. (Jimmy) Douglas was the first candidate to qualify in person for re-election this week. The very first candidate to qualify for re-election was Cairo Mayor Richard VanLandingham, but he did so by proxy. City Clerk Carolyn Lee reports that Mayor Pro Tem Ernest Cloud Jr. also qualified Monday. Unless someone qualifies to oppose one of the three incumbents no municipal election will be held this November. Qualifying wraps up Friday at 4:30 p.m. Candidates who wish to qualify may do so at Cairo City Hall.
