Last week, a real estate transaction closed that clears the way for a new Dollar General Store to open in Whigham.
Mink Creek Investments, LLC, of Huntsville, Ala., purchased approximately one acre of land from Teresa Bond of Whigham for the construction of the new Dollar General at 135 E. Broad Ave., Whigham. The sale was recorded here Friday.
“I’m tickled pink,” Mayor Laing said Tuesday, adding, “this is something I’ve been working for ever since I came into office. Every other small town has a Dollar General and I couldn’t understand why we couldn’t get one in Whigham. Now I want to read about it in the headlines.”
Grady County Code Enforcement Officer Larry Ivy says the metal building Mink Creek Investments will construct will be 9,100 square feet.
The total investment in the facility is projected to be $450,000, and Ivy says work could begin within the next two to three weeks.
According to Ivy, Mink can complete the new store on a three to four month schedule.
“My communications with the contractor have been they would be ready to break ground as soon as the land deal closed,” Ivy said.
The real estate transaction was recorded Friday, public records indicate.
Mayor Laing says the new Dollar General will offer a variety of grocery items, which he says have been sorely missed since the town’s last grocery store was shuttered.
“I was glad they were able to work something out with the Bonds. We were sorta pinched for land, and we really wanted it in the city limits. This is great news,” Mayor Laing said.
