Some motorists in the vicinity of Cairo High School on Monday morning were unnerved when the school resource officer directing traffic at the intersection of Fifth Street S.E. and Sixth Avenue S.E. collapsed in the middle of the street.
According to school officials, School Resource Officer Gary Hines, who is assigned to duty at Cairo High School, was directing traffic during the height of morning traffic when he was struck down by a suspected seizure. The incident occurred just before 7:45 a.m. Monday.
Some eyewitnesses told school officials that at first it appeared Hines had been struck by a vehicle, but that was not the case.
First responders were dispatched and Hines was transported to a Tallahassee hospital where he was treated and released.
“We are thankful Officer Hines was not seriously injured and that he is receiving proper medical attention. We look forward to him being able to return to work,” said Grady County school superintendent Dr. Kermit Gilliard.
According to the superintendent, in Officer Hines’ absence, school resource officers from the other elementary schools in the system are being rotated in to serve at C.H.S.
Hines has been employed as an officer with the Grady County School System Police Department since July 2019.
