ELI PYRZ is the 2020 STAR Student at Cairo High School.
Cairo High School’s STAR Student says taking the S.A.T. multiple times was one tactic that helped him improve his score. The scholar and athlete is now setting his sights on continuing his education in college with a goal of studying medicine.
Eli Pyrz made a 1420 on the standardized S.A.T., just 180 points shy of a perfect score.
Pyrz says, “Repeated practice with the time conditions and types of questions allowed me to better my score each time.”
The senior with the highest S.A.T. score is honored with the title STAR Student, and also gets to name a STAR Teacher. Pyrz selected Kristin Blough for the honor.
“She is a very fun loving teacher that teaches well through the use of concise directions and easy to follow note pages,” says Pyrz. “She is very approachable and definitely cares about her students. She keeps the lessons interesting and is always open to questions.”
Blough teaches Algebra 2, precalculus and A.P. calculus at Cairo High, and this is the second time she has been named STAR Teacher. She describes Pyrz as an intelligent and well-mannered young man deserving of the recognition.
“He has a great work ethic and always strives for excellence both in and out of the classroom. He has the ability to quickly understand concepts at a higher level and build upon them. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching him this year and being a witness to his success,” Blough says.
A Top 10 student every year at C.H.S., Pyrz has also kept a busy schedule of extracurricular activities.
He started for the Syrupmaker football team as center and long snapper, and was region wrestling champion in the 195 pound weight class. Pyrz and teammates in F.B.L.A. placed in the top 15 on the national level. He was a member of the bio-Olympiad team, National Honor Society, Key Club, Student Council and Interact Club.
Pyrz also allots time to civic activities, such as volunteering at Southside Elementary School’s Field Day and at Shiver School’s Fall Festival. He’s also tutored football players.
Pyrz says he plans to attend the University of Georgia and, eventually, medical school.
His STAR Teacher says whatever Pyrz decides to do, she has faith that he will succeed. “Eli has a bright future ahead of him, and I cannot wait to see all that he accomplishes,” she says.
The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition, or STAR program, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation. Only high school seniors in the top 10 percent or top 10 students in the class are eligible. The senior who has the highest score on any single test date of the S.A.T. earns the title.
