A $200,000 GRANT will help the City of Cairo with its plan to expand and upgrade Southern Terrace Park in southwest Cairo. The city has recently purchased adjoining property to expand the city park.
Sen. Dean Burke has announced that the Southern Terrace Park Trails Program has been selected by the Federal Highway Administration Recreational Trails Program to receive funding for the Georgia Recreational Trails grant. Upon final approval by FHWA, the Southern Terrace Park Trail project will be awarded $200,000. The funds will be available around the fall of this year.
“This grant is a huge win for the city of Cairo,” said Sen. Burke (R–Bainbridge). “The application process was very competitive and I am so proud that Cairo was selected. With these grants, the city plans to create recreational trails throughout Southern Terrace Park. These trails will provide fitness opportunities, allow citizens to enjoy nature and wildlife, and ultimately, bring communities together. I will be following the process closely and I look forward to seeing the progress that will come about because of this program.”
The Georgia Recreational Trails Program is a grant program, which provides funding for recreational trail construction and maintenance through funds allocated to the state through the FHWA. The allocated funds represent the state’s share of the federal gasoline tax collected on fuel sales for off-highway motorized vehicles such as ATV’s, motorcycles and snowmobiles. The intent of the program is to enhance trail opportunities that would not otherwise be possible.
Sen. Burke represents the 11th Senate District which includes Colquitt, Decatur, Early, Grady, Miller and Seminole counties and portions of Mitchell and Thomas counties.
