CAIRO’S HISTORIC TRAIN DEPOT will get a new purpose after the city police department moves out later this year. But, what should that purpose be? The community is invited to give their input on March 5.
The future of Cairo’s historic train depot is up for discussion since the city police department is moving to a new headquarters this summer. City officials say they want input from the community about how the downtown building could be utilized, and they are inviting the public to attend input sessions to talk about their ideas for the depot early next month.
Chris Addleton, Cairo’s city manager, says proper use of the depot will contribute to a successful downtown in the future. “Envisioning the train depot as the hub of our downtown is vital to our continued revitalization efforts,” Addleton says.
The University of Georgia Archway Partnership will facilitate the two sessions, which will take place on Thursday, March 5, one in the morning and the other in the early evening in hopes of encouraging community participation.
Each session will begin with a walking tour of the train depot, according to Addleton, to get a sense of the space. Several exhibits and historic photos will also be available for preview.
The input sessions will take place at The Foundry, located across the street from the train depot at 120 S. Broad St. The first session will begin at 9 a.m., and the second one at 6 p.m.
