The 2019 South Georgia Economic Development Bus Tour will roll into Cairo on Thursday with an 8 a.m. stop at the historic Zebulon Theater.
Grady County Joint Development Authority executive director Julian Brown says the community-owned theater would be a unique venue to host the 26 statewide project managers and economic development officials participating in the bus tour.
“I am doing my presentation at the Zebulon Theater to showcase one of Cairo’s most unique places. This also gets these project managers to see our downtown,” Brown said.
In addition to project managers with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, representatives of the University System of Georgia, CSX Railroad and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs are slated to attend.
The bus tour is hosted by the Electric Cities of Georgia and the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia.
Brown says he will share a video presentation that includes local available properties and he will discuss future plans for Milestone Industrial Park as well as share some local success stories.
“Lastly, I will touch on Tired Creek Lake. The more eyes and ears we get on this project the better,” Brown said.
Brown will treat the bus tour participants with goodie bags filled with local items including handmade cookies baked by the Cairo High School culinary arts program that feature the ECG logo on them. Dark Horse Java coffees will be served and the Zebulon snack bar will be open.
The tour will leave Cairo for a stop in Whigham hosted by city officials there. A traditional bus tour stop is Trulock Chokes.
Additional tour stops include Adel, Albany, Blakely, Camilla, Crisp County, Doerun, Douglas, Fitzgerald, Moultrie, Quitman, Sylvester and Thomasville, all of which are members of ECG and MEAG Power.
According to Brown, the tour offers economic development project managers on a statewide level an opportunity to visit places like Cairo and Whigham personally and learn what makes the community a desirable location for businesses.
State project managers link business owners that are looking to relocate with communities across Georgia that fit the needs of the businesses. This exposure for Economic Development opportunities only heightens the potential economic and business growth for these cities.
Officials say that the fact that Cairo and Whigham own their own electric utility makes both communities attractive to potential business owners.
