City gets less money from state for paving, but nearly seven miles of streets will be resurfaced

The city of Cairo will receive less state money to assist with street resurfacing in fiscal year 2015-2016, but that is not stopping the city council from tackling an ambitious street resurfacing project.
On Monday night the city council authorized Mayor Bobby Burns to execute the Georgia Department of Transportation Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) application.
Cairo City Manager Chris Addleton said the city is expected to receive $108,616, which is down from $109,355 in fiscal year 2014-2015. The city is required to match 30 percent of the LMIG award, which is $32,584.92.
Addleton has recommended and this week the council approved a plan to combine the LMIG funds with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax – 2014 proceeds to resurface all of M.L. King Jr. Ave. S.W. from South Broad Street west to the city limits. The estimated cost to resurface this 1.5 mile long street is $250,000.
