City police car damaged in crash
A Cairo police officer wrecked his patrol car Saturday afternoon when he pulled onto U.S. 84 from a business driveway in pursuit of an alleged traffic law violator.
The accident was investigated by the Georgia State Patrol and occurred at 3:50 p.m., March 21.
The police officer at the wheel of the cruiser was officer Alan Cooper, 26. His 2009 Ford Crown Victoria was hit by a 1995 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Nicolas Diego of Meigs, 28, who was traveling east on U.S. 84.
According to the GSP, the city patrol car drove into the path of Diego and hit the Blazer’s right front fender.
Diego was charged with driving while unlicensed. As of Tuesday, no charges had been filed against the officer.
Both vehicles were not drivable and were towed from the scene. Neither party was seriously injured or transported to the hospital.
