School board meets in lengthy closed session

The Grady County Board of Education met behind closed doors Tuesday night for just over an hour to discuss personnel issues.
Coming in and out of the meeting were Superintendent Lee M. Bailey, Board Attorney Thomas L. Lehman and Southside Principal Janet Walden.
Prior to the closed session, Board Chairman Teresa Gee Harris requested that a list of employees who have resigned be removed from the superintendent’s personnel recommendations, which also included new hires and the approval of retirements by three teachers. Ms. Harris requested action on the list of resignations to be postponed until after the closed session.
She noted that the list had been expanded since she was originally presented the agenda last Friday.
Once the meeting was reopened to the public the board voted unanimously to accept the resignations of Jack Nichols – Cairo High School parking lot security officer; Diana Martin – teacher at Eastside; Randy Curby – technology specialist; Thomas D. Chason – bus driver; Gabriel Russo – special ed paraprofessional at Southside; Cherelle Anderson – paraprofessional at Washington Middle School; and Mary Gurley – paraprofessional at Northside.
Earlier in the meeting, the board approved the hiring of Daryl Jones as a physical education and health teacher at CHS and approved the retirements of Sabrina Nix – Southside Elementary School teacher; David Connell – ag teacher at CHS; and John C. Connell – In-School Suspension teacher at Washington Middle School.
