Final phase of 20th Street N.E. project expected to begin this week

Work is expected to begin this week on the final phase of the 20th Street N.E. resurfacing and rehabilitation project, according to Cairo City Manager Chris Addleton.
The city manager updated the city council on the project Monday night after Councilman Dr. Kermit Gilliard requested a briefing.
Gilliard, who also serves as the assistant superintendent of Grady County Schools, said that Eastside Principal Shelia Cain had asked him when the project would begin.
City officials have planned for the work to be done during the summer break to prevent the need for detours and traffic delays when school reopens later this year.
“I talked with the engineer today and the contractor will be beginning work this week,” Addleton said Monday night.
Gilliard asked how long it would take for the project to be completed and Addleton estimated approximately four weeks, but that it could be sooner.
A full depth reclamation of the street will be done from near Eastside Elementary School out to the intersection with GA Highway 188. The Scruggs Company of Hahira, Ga. is the contractor on the project. The cost of the project is $245,238.19 which is being paid for with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax proceeds.
