Youth ages 8-17 can go on free plane ride Saturday

Area young people, ages 8-17, will have a chance to take to the skies this Saturday, Oct. 20, as Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Chapter 445, hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at the Cairo Municipal Airport.
The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to interest young people in aviation. Since the program was launched in 1992, Volunteer EAA pilots have flown more than 1.4 million young people who reside in more than 90 countries.
“Free airplane rides are just part of the Flight Rally” said Danny Deason, spokesman for the event. “We hope to build one-to-one relationships between pilots and young people, giving a new generation a chance to learn more about the possibilities that exist in the world of aviation.”
Pilots at the event will also explain more about their airplanes, allowing young people to discover how airplanes work, as well as how pilots ensure safety, the prime concern before every flight.
Following the flight, each young person will receive a certificate making them an official Young Eagle. Their name will then be entered into the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The Logbook is also accessible on the web at www.youngeagles.org .
Other activities scheduled for the Flight Rally include: the Cairo Fire Department demonstration of fire safety and Ladder Fire Truck; a Vietnam era helicopter exhibit by Doug Taylor where pictures can be taken for a small fee with proceeds going to scholarship funds for the Cairo High School NJROTC program; hamburgers and chips will be provided by Country Time BBQ, along with BBQ plates by Philip Drew and Donnie Cox.
Along with flight rallies, EAA members also fly Young Eagles on an individual basis. Each pilot volunteers his time and aircraft so the flights can be provided free of charge for interested young people. The city of Cairo airport committee and fixed base personnel have been striving for an event such as this for quite some time and are encouraging a good turnout at the event, according to Deason.
If there are any questions concerning the event please call the airport at 377-6700.
Those wishing to attend the flight rally on Oct. 20 are asked to arrive at the Cairo Municipal Airport starting at 9 a.m. to register for their flight. Flights will begin at approximately 9 a.m., with registration ending at noon. A parent or legal guardian’s signature will be required for each participant.
