Donations sought for funeral expenses of car crash victim

Students at Cairo High School are working to raise money in memory of young Brandon Hartley who was killed in a car accident over the holiday weekend.
Brandon, a junior at CHS, was killed when he wrecked his 2008 Dodge Charger around 4 a.m., Sunday. The 16-year-old was attempting to negotiate a curve at 630 Elkins Rd., when he lost control of the car and struck a tree.
The tragedy is upsetting to CHS students and some sought assistance from school counselors on Tuesday, the first day school was in session after the three-day Labor Day weekend and the accident.
“The Guidance Office cleared their calendars Tuesday so they were available for any students who felt they wanted counsel,” said Principal David McCurry.
Mr. McCurry said students are remembering Brandon throughout the week, beginning with the Student Council taking donations to help the family defray funeral costs.
“The school is going to recognize Brandon with a moment of silence Friday night (at the Syrupmaker football game), and some juniors want to sell memorial T-shirts to raise money to help the family cover funeral costs,” he said.
Anyone in the public who would like to make a donation to the family may do so at the high school, McCurry said.
