Jogger hit by police vehicle

A jogger running in front of the Cairo Police Department early Tuesday was accidentally struck by a police vehicle as an officer returned to the station.
Cairo Police Chief Keith Sandefur said that Lt. Dwight Patten was traveling north on Broad Street in a 2018 Dodge Ram pickup at approximately 6:30 a.m. when he turned west to park in the parking area on the north side of the police headquarters. As Patten turned he struck the runner who was also traveling north.
“Lt. Patten said he never saw her until she was in his windshield and he had hit her,” Chief Sandefur said Tuesday.
The female was knocked down and suffered cuts and scrapes. She was transported to Archbold Memorial Hospital by Grady Emergency Medical Service.
The chief said the runner without doubt had the right-of-way as a pedestrian.
Chief Sandefur said that the Georgia State Patrol was called to investigate the accident. GSP personnel were not available Tuesday afternoon to provide additional details regarding the accident.
The police chief did not know the age of the victim, but did know that she grew up here, but no longer lives here and is here visiting.
“We have been in contact with the family and will continue to follow up. Our primary concern is her health and well-being,” Chief Sandefur said.
