Relay for Life steps off Saturday afternoon

The footsteps of many walkers will be heard at Cairo’s Davis Park Saturday when participants in the 2018 Grady County Relay for Life take steps to raise money for American Cancer Society. Teams of walkers have been working for many weeks to raise money for the annual event, which will begin at 2 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m. at the park located behind the Grady County Courthouse.
“Come out and support your local Relay for Life teams as they raise money for the cure,” states Jackie Pearson, local event leader. “There will be music, games and food. Something for all ages and fun is sure to be had by all.”
The theme of this year’s Relay is “Light up the Night” and the day’s activities will kick off at 2 p.m. with cancer survivors walking the opening lap. The Relay will wrap up eight hours later with a closing ceremony following the lighting of special luminaries purchased in memory or in honor of loved ones.
Cancer survivors are also being honored with a special meal planned for next week, according to Pearson. The Survivor’s Supper is scheduled for Friday, April 20, at Faith Christian Center beginning at 6:30 p.m.
“If you are a cancer survivor and you didn’t receive an invitation, you are invited!” states Pearson. “This is for all cancer survivors in Grady County and they may bring one guest/caregiver with them.”
The evening is free, and Faith Christian providing the meal.
“Please try to attend this event so we can get you registered an in the mailing system with the American Cancer Society,” she says.
Those who plan to attend are asked to RSVP to Sherry Smith by calling (229) 378-0638.
“We ask that you RSVP so that we have an idea of how many to plan for. If you do not have a chance to RSVP, please do not let that stop you from attending,” Pearson says.
Faith Christian Center is located at 1548 Hwy. 188 in Cairo.
