Grady County brothers run over by alleged drunk driver

Grady County brothers tell police they were trying to stop a man from driving, but were run over instead. Three days later one was still in the hospital. The driver told police he feared for his safety and that’s why he fled the scene.
The incident happened Saturday at 9:15 p.m. at 14 Fifth Ave. SE. Witnesses told Cairo Police that the brothers, Douglas Simpson and Joe Simpson, were standing in the doorway of an SUV and appeared to be talking with the driver when he put the vehicle in reverse and backed up, striking both Simpsons.  
When Cairo Police Lt. Wayne Redden arrived at the scene, he saw Doug Simpson lying in the roadway. The Cairo Fire Department arrived and administered first aid and Lt. Redden began questioning witnesses.
Eventually, Grady EMS transported Doug Simpson to Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, according to Cairo Police Investigator Wandell Asbell. Simpson remained in the hospital Tuesday, Asbell said.
The brothers told Asbell that the SUV driver, Matthew Philip Olson, 30, Thomasville, had been drinking alcohol and they were trying to stop him from leaving the scene.
Asbell says officers were unable to locate Olson until Monday morning when he reported to court in Thomasville for a hearing related to another case and was taken into custody on a parole violation. Olson told Asbell he was in fear for his personal safety, so he fled the scene in Cairo Saturday.
Cairo Police have charged Olson with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries, Asbell says. He was being held in the Thomas County Jail.
