National Day of Prayer is Thursday

Grady countians are reminded that tomorrow, Thursday, May 5, is the annual National Day of Prayer.
The Grady County Ministerial Association is the local sponsor of the event and committee members Teresa Prince, the Rev. Travis Harrison, the Rev. Charles Whatley and the Rev. Ron McCaskill have been busy planning for the day.
Since 1952, the nation has set aside the first Thursday of May to pray for the nation.
The theme for the 65th annual observance is “Wake Up America.”
Citizens are invited to join prayer groups at seven different sites beginning at 11:17 a.m. and then gathering together at the courthouse for a mass prayer at 12:07 p.m.
Prayers for local government will be lifted up at the courthouse and led by the Rev. Dr. Ron McCaskill, pastor of Christ Church, Cairo.
Citizens will pray for the military at a gathering at Veterans Park on South Broad Street in downtown Cairo. Pastor Kevin Hindsman of Redeeming Life Fellowship Church will lead this group.
Prayers for the media will be spoken at The Cairo Messenger and led by the Rev. Charles Whatley and the Rev. R.T. Beverly.
Prayers for businesses will be lifted up at Delicious Delights, 195 Third St. S.E., with Pastor D. Serfoss of Christ Gospel Church leading the group.
Prayers for our schools and local educators will be spoken at the Grady County School System central office, 122 North Broad St., and led by Pastor William Staten of Faith Christian Center.
Prayers for the community’s churches will also be lifted up at Restoration Fellowship, 290 Second Ave. N.E, and led by the church’s pastor, Donnie Smith.
Finally, prayers for the family will be lifted up at Walmart and led by Pastor Travis Harrison of First Assembly of God.
Following the prayer sessions at the seven local sites, citizens are asked to begin assembling at the courthouse. At approximately 11:47 a.m. Mrs. Heather Elkins will sing.
Following the pledge of allegiance, Teresa Prince will pray the official prayer of the National Day of Prayer.
Also scheduled to perform during the service are Adam Starr and Tracy Harrison.
In the event of rain, the service will move from the courthouse lawn to the Zebulon Theater.
