Lawmen shut down suspected meth lab

While trying to arrest a Cairo man on outstanding drug arrest warrants, local law enforcement officers say they discovered a suspected methamphetamine lab, and caught the man they wanted.
Cary Brandon Smith, 30, 259 D&G Lane, had been on the run since March, but he was taken into custody last week. Shortly after midnight on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, deputies with the Grady County Sheriff’s Office assisted by Cairo Police officers, went to a home on Old Egg Road to find Smith.
On the scene, officers say they could smell a strong chemical odor of a suspected meth lab. When they attempted to execute the arrest warrant, one person run out the back door and another fled through the front door. Officers say Smith was apprehended in the front yard.
While looking for the second subject who had fled, officers saw a box fan blowing the chemical smell out through an open window at the back of the residence. The officers allegedly removed two women from the residence for safety, and then obtained a search warrant to go into the residence.
With the assistance of Decatur County Narcotics Investigators and investigators with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation from the Region 15 GBI office in Sylvester, deputies with the Grady County Sheriff’s Office searched the residence. Officers say they found a quantity of suspected methamphetamine, numerous components used to manufacture meth, and several firearms.
Smith was wanted by police after he allegedly fled from another meth lab when Grady County Sheriff’s deputies investigated a case in March. When they arrived on the scene, several people were arrested, but Smith allegedly fled the area. With the help of Decatur County Narcotics Investigators and Clan Lab Investigators, several meth labs were collected and disposed of that day, according to the Grady County Sheriff’s Office.
Now, Smith, along with Yalanda Denetra Mills, 32, 592-18 Old Egg Rd., is charged with six felonies, possession of methamphetamine, possession of components used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, manufacturing methamphetamine, unlawful possession of pseudoephedrine, possession of firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by convicted felon.
Miazia Kyan Bodiford, 17, 592-18 Old Egg Rd. is charged with five felonies, possession of methamphetamine, possession of components used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, manufacturing methamphetamine, unlawful possession of pseudoephedrine, and possession of firearm during the commission of a crime.
“There may be more charges and more arrests forthcoming,” says Capt. Steve Clark, chief investigator with the Grady County Sheriff’s Office.
