Historical Society to meet at Cooper Cottage next week

The Grady County Historical Society will gather for its annual meeting at Cooper Cottage, 1721 Stagecoach Road, Spence community, on Tuesday, March 10, at 6:30 p.m. An “Old Fashioned Box Supper” will be served for a donation of $7 per person.
Back in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s, Box Suppers were held to raise money for the school or community. The ladies and girls packed a delicious meal for two, usually in a shoebox, and decorated with crepe paper, ribbons and whatever materials they had in order to make them attractive. Inside the box, one might find fried chicken, sandwiches, potato salad, cookies, cake or maybe fried apple pies. The winning bidder got to eat with the lady or girl who prepared the box supper. Sometimes, the bidding was high for something made by a pretty and popular girl or for one made by the very good cook.
After a brief business meeting conducted by Celeste Tyler, president, a program by Donna Cooper Powell will be shared on her recently published book “A Look At Times Past In Spence, Georgia.” A PowerPoint presentation of photos included in the book of the community will be presented. Photos and memories of living in Spence, going to school at Spence and other area schools, attending one of the area churches, swimming at the Millpond or Pope’s Creek, a baptism at the Millpond or Pope’s Creek, family gatherings, old home places, and the ways of making a living and businesses of “Downtown Spence” will be shared.
As you travel northward to Spence from N Broad St. and U.S. HWY 84 in Cairo, travel GA Hwy 93/111 for 3.5 miles. Continue on GA Hwy 111 for 4.5 miles. Turn left on Spence Road, travel 2.7 miles.  Turn left on Stagecoach Road, travel 0.8 mile. Cooper Cottage, yellow siding house, is on left.
Members and friends of the Historical Society are encouraged to attend and enjoy an evening in the Spence community. For more information or questions, contact Donna Powell at 229-294-9631 or The Grady County Museum at 229-377-5142.
