School board approves new roof for central office

A leaking roof at the Grady County School System’s central office will soon be repaired following action taken by the school board Tuesday night.
Assistant School Superintendent Dr. Kermit Gilliard presented three bids to the board for the replacement of the roof at the central office.
School board members voted unanimously to accept the low bid of $12,321.92 from Bainbridge Roofing for the project. Other bids received were $18,590 from Cairo Home Builders and $66,108 from GFA Design Build of Cairo.
The roof is a common roof with the building south of the central office, and the owners of that building have agreed to pay for that section of the roof, which based on the low bid will be $3,822.20.
In other related business Tuesday night, the school board approved the purchase and installation of two pairs of doors at Shiver Elementary School. The new storefront wall will have doors that must be buzzed open by school personnel and will eliminate people coming in the school building without permission or without the knowledge of the administration.
The cost of the Shiver project from Cairo Glass & Paint is $5,925.
The school board also approved the purchase of a new storefront door at the rear entrance to the central office at a cost of $1,300.
The roof and both door projects will be funded through cash reserves, according to Finance Officer Dan Broome.
