Council says no to block party

Local residents planning a last minute party for about 200 people outside a residence at 1213 Pine Circle S.W. had their plans nixed by the Cairo City Council Thursday night.
Emma Hines submitted a last minute block party permit request on Thursday for a party that was to have been held last Friday night. According to the permit request the party was to celebrate a birthday and homecoming and the event was expected to last until 2 a.m.
Councilman James H. (Jimmy) Douglas quickly offered a motion to deny the request since it was not turned in at the proper time and cited the fact that 200 people partying until 2 a.m. in a residential section would not be proper.
Councilman Kermit Gilliard seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Mayor Pro Tem Lannis Thorton suggested the hosts in the future make application earlier and to check with all neighbors and have them sign an agreement indicating their approval of the permit request.
