34 candidates interested in superintendency

A total of 34 candidates have submitted applications to become the next Grady County School Superintendent.
On Tuesday night, Grady County Board of Education Chairman Drew Pyrz briefed the members of the board present on the ongoing search to replace retiring Superintendent Dr. Tommy Pharis.
Board member Allen Jenkins was absent Tuesday night.
According to Chairman Pyrz, Bill Sampson with the Georgia School Boards Association reported Tuesday that a total of 34 applications for the post had been received at the GSBA headquarters in Lawrenceville.
“They will begin the verification of education background on all of the applicants on Thursday,” Chairman Pyrz said.
The board also discussed scheduling a meeting with Sampson, who is serving as the board’s consultant on the superintendent search, for Sunday, March 24 from 2p.m. until 5 p.m. or on Wednesday, March 27 from 3:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.
Board members hope to hire a new superintendent by April 15 if possible.
Dr. Pharis’ contract as superintendent runs through June 30 and he plans to retire effect July 1.
Chairman Pyrz said he would contact Sampson to finalize a date to meet. At the same time the consultant will conduct required board member training.
