Memorial services for James Leroy “Jimmy” Payne, 70, of Cairo, GA, will
be held at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2011, at Cairo First Baptist
Church, Cairo, GA, with Rev. Paul Day and Rev. Dr. Joe Allen
officiating.
Jimmy went home to the Lord on March 9, 2011, at Archbold Memorial
Hospital, Thomasville, GA, after an extended illness. He was born on
April 8, 1940, in Adairsville, GA, and had been a resident of Cairo
since 1985.
Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Cairo First Baptist Church and members of the Baraca Sunday School Class.
Jimmy was a simple, self-educated man who touched many people throughout
his lifetime with his quiet dedication to doing the Lord’s work and
giving of himself, whenever the opportunity arose. He led by example
and the high morals he exhibited during his life impacted not only his
family, but those around him in the workplace and in everyday life.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Ritter Payne of
Cairo; son and daughter-in-law, David and Joy Payne of Thomasville;
daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Victor Hurst of Conyers and Susan
and Brett Phillips of Cairo; and grandchildren Austin, Garrett and
Ashlee Payne of Thomasville, Cole, Claire and Emalee Ryan Phillips of
Cairo and Tori and Lorne Hurst of Conyers.
Other survivors include: sister and brother-in-law, Diann and Norman
Parker of Adairsville; niece Linda Faye Cornelius of Tallahassee,
Florida; a nephew Charles Holcomb of Deer Park, Texas; numerous nieces
and nephews; and his beloved Boston Terrier “Jack”.
He was preceded in death by his parents Charles Richard Payne and Ruby Wilkey (Payne) Curby.
Jimmy was a member and deacon of Cairo First Baptist Church and a member
of the Gideons and Woodmen of the World Lodge #580. He participated in
the Georgia Campers On Missions and served with the Missions Volunteers
and English as a Second Language Grady County. He was also involved
with numerous missionary and evangelistic projects associated with the
Georgia Baptist Convention.
Jimmy worked with Winn-Dixie for 25 years in Thomasville and
Tallahassee, Florida and retired from Harvey’s, Inc., in Cairo, as a
store manager.
