Services for Evelyn Cora Gainous Hester, 97, of Cairo, Ga., will be
held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at the First United
Methodist Church of Cairo. The Rev. Henry Bass and the Rev. Tegler
Greer will officiate. Interment will follow in Springhill United
Methodist Church Cemetery, Whigham, Ga. Mrs. Hester passed away on
Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Golden Living Nursing Home in Thomasville,
Ga.
Active pallbearers will be Randy Mitchell, Jimmy Ausburn, Tony Collins,
Charlie Hand, Eddie Chambers, Johnny Moore and Kermit Gilliard Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Golden “K”, XYZ of Cairo First United
Methodist Church, her Wesley Aldersgate Sunday School Class, the Ladies
Auxiliary of Grady General Hospital and Wayside Community Club.
Mrs. Hester was born on July 16, 1913, in Cairo to the late John
Whitfield Gainous and Missouri Elizabeth Bryant Gainous. She was
married to the late William B. “Bill” Hester, who preceded her in death
in May of 1977. She was a dedicated music teacher who taught many
children to play the piano and appreciate music. Mrs. Hester was a
founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Grady General Hospital
founded in 1950. She watched as the first hospital was built and
remembers Dr. Walker asking the ladies to keep fresh flowers at the
entrance to the hospital. Mrs. Hester visited the hospital each day to
assist the three nurses on duty. In later years, her greatest joy was
attending gospel sings and visiting with her musical friends. She was a
member of the First United Methodist Church of Cairo.
Survivors include: son and daughters-in-law, William “Billy” and Betty
N. Hester of Cairo, Ga., Doris P. Hester of Stockbridge, Ga., Zel C.
Hester of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren, Bill and Pam Hester of
Ochlocknee, Ga., Joey M. and Melanie Hester of Thomasville, Ga., Hannah
E. and Alan Rogers of Athens, Ga., Ronnie W. and Teresa Hester of
Cairo, and Charlotte H. Coltraine of Stockbridge; great-grandchildren,
Brian Coltraine of Jonesboro, Zax Hester of Thomasville, Taylor Hester
of Thomasville, Billy J. and Jade Hester of Cairo, Nat Hester and
Melissa of Cairo, Staci H. and Chris Chastain of Valdosta, Ga., Ron
Hester of Tifton, Ga., Diana H. and Tim Rogers of Jonesboro and Grant
Rogers of Athens, Ga.; great-great-grandchildren, Flint Hester of
Cairo, Killiao Hester of Cairo, Halie Rogers of Jonesboro, Reagan
Chastain of Valdosta, Westin Chastain of Valdosta, Ray Hester of Cairo,
Kale Hester of Cairo.
Mrs. Hester was preceded in death by: her husband, William B. Hester;
parents, John and Missouri Gainous; sons, John T. Hester and Dempsey R.
Hester; grandchildren, Carter M. Hester, Tommy Hester, Danny Hester and
Ray Hester.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010.

Church Chancel Choir, 318 South Broad St., Cairo, GA 39828.
