Services for John Wesley “J.W.” Whitfield, 90, of Whigham, GA, are at
3:00 p.m., Saturday, September 18, 2010, at the First Baptist Church of
Cairo. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Cairo, with
military honors. Dr. Ron McCaskill and Dr. Joe Allen will officiate.
Mr. Whitfield passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at his
home.
Active pallbearers will be his nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be
the Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Cairo and members of J. W.
and Adele’s Sunday School Class, Wyman Richter and David Stallings.
Mr. Whitfield was born December 21, 1919, in Reno, GA, to the late
Edward James Whitfield and Addie Bell Bryant Whitfield. He served his
country in France and Germany in combat and was a survivor of the Battle
of the Bulge. On September 2, 1940, he was married to Adele Chason
Whitfield, who survives. He was self-employed as a farmer. He was a
member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Cairo.
Survivors include: wife, Adele C. Whitfield of Whigham, GA; sons and
daughters-in-law, Wesley C. and Sally Whitfield of Cairo, GA, Roger R.
and Judy Whitfield of Lynchburg, VA, Ronald J. and Sue Whitfield of
Cairo, GA, Dwight B. Whitfield of Whigham, GA; daughter, Sharon
Whitfield of Whigham, GA; grandchildren, Carol and Ron Dixon of
Thomasville, GA, Maj. Marcus and Deana Whitfield of Hawaii (Marcus is
serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq), Leisel Luman of Fort Myers, FL, Bryan
Whitfield of Thomasville, GA, Natalia and Allen Cooper of Cairo, GA,
Andrea and Bernie Gandy of Tallahassee, FL, John Whitfield of Whigham,
GA, Heather Whitfield of St. George Island, FL, Shannan and Justin
Harris of Atlanta, GA; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Norton of
Waynesboro, MS; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gillun C. Davis,
Sr. of Arcadia, FL, Willard H. and Carolyn Chason of Cairo, GA, and
Wilsie Kostedt of Macon, GA.
Mr. Whitfield was preceded in death by: his parents, Edward James
Whitfield and Addie Bell Bryant Whitfield; sister, Lillie Whitfield
Davis; and a daughter-in-law, Joyce Mills Whitfield.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 17, 2010, at the funeral home.
