Services for Cecil C. McDonald, 82, of Cairo, GA are at 10:30 a.m.,
Friday, August 13, 2010, at First Baptist Church, Cairo, GA. The Rev.
Dr. Ron McCaskill and Rev. Dr. Joe Allen will officiate. Interment will
be 2:30 p.m. in Friendship Cemetery, Donalsonville, GA. Mr. McDonald
passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at Archbold Memorial Hospital in
Thomasville, GA.
Active pallbearers will be members of the Cairo High School Junior ROTC.
Mr. McDonald was born September 29, 1927, in Altha, FL, to the late
William H. and Nannie Mae Faircloth McDonald. Graduating from Troy
State University, he did graduate work at F.S.U. and Mercer University
and started his teaching career in Seminole County at Donalsonville FDR
School. Cecil and Maxie moved to Cairo in 1950 and continued his
teaching career at Midway School, Southside Elementary School, and
Northside Elementary School. He served as Superintendent of Grady
County Schools from 1976 to 1980, and again from 1984 to 1988. He was
Dean of Students at Thomas University from 1980 until 1984. Retirement
came for Cecil in 1988, but he remained active in community affairs,
serving on the Board of Health, as President of Cairo Kiwanis Club, Lt.
Gov. of Kiwanis, Assistant Recreation Director, Swim Coach, Life Guard,
and Umpire for Grady County youth. He attained the distinction of
Eagle Scout and was one of the first scout leaders in Grady County. He
and Maxie, along with their daughters, were very active in First Baptist
Church where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include: his loving wife, Maxie McDonald, Cairo, GA;
daughters and sons-in-law, Cecilia Westbrook (Richard), Lafayette, GA
and Martha M. Fowler (Roger), Donalsonville, GA; brothers and sisters,
Rev. Ralph McDonald, Moultrie, GA; Sophie Earnest, Donalsonville, GA,
Marjorie Anderson, Kingston, TN, Rev. Wayne McDonald, Cairo, GA and Kate
Mitchell, Jakin, GA; grandchildren, Don Gwaltney (Sharon), Roswell,
GA, Rich Gwaltney (Kerry), Penang, Malaysia, Phillip Jones (Carey),
Flowery Branch, GA, William Jones (Ashley), Cairo, GA;
great-grandchildren, Anna and Sarah Gwaltney, Katie and Ben Gwaltney,
Charleston and Phillip Jones, Noah, Lauren, and Eli Jones.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Bill, Jr., Rudolph and Grady McDonald.
The family will receive friends Thursday, August 12, 2010, at the
Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church in Cairo from 6 until 8:00 p.m.
