Cairo man killed while bicycling in south Grady An accused drunk driver killed a bicyclist in a hit and run accident in south Grady County Tuesday evening. The 22-year-old suspect has a history of drunk driving and is being held in Grady Detention Center. He was taken into custody near his wrecked pickup truck Tuesday hours before it was realized the cyclist, 53-year-old Martin Langmaid, was missing. According to Sheriff's Investigator Steve Clark, Langmaid had left his home after work around 5 p.m., for an expected two-hour bike ride. Mr. Langmaid was technical services manager for Monrovia. When he failed to return home from his ride or answer phone calls, his wife called on Langmaid's cycling friends, who began combing the trail they often rode together. After looking without success, the friends advised Mrs. Langmaid to contact 911, which she did around 10 p.m. A search party was organized involving sheriff's officers and volunteer fire fighters from Midway, Reno and Beachton, who also searched the area. In the 700 block of Lower Hawthorne Trail, Sheriff's Investigator Daniel Singletary said he saw something reflect in his headlights around 11:45 p.m. When he got out of the car to look closer, Singletary realized it was a biker's helmet. He found Mr. Langmaid's body lying in a ditch nearby, and his wrecked bicycle further away in a wood line. It appeared Langmaid had been riding northbound on Lower Hawthorne, and hit from behind. The bike accident was 1.6 miles from the intersection of Highway 111 South and Lower Hawthorne Trail where Chaz Michael Gomez had crashed his pickup truck, a 1999 Ford Ranger. When a witness reported the wreck, "it appeared to be a normal single-vehicle accident," said Clark, except it seemed the driver was attempting to hide or flee the scene, according to the witness. On the scene, the responding deputy found the Ranger rolled onto its roof, and the driver outside of the vehicle. Gomez was taken into custody and charged with DUI, failure to maintain lane, and driving in violation of conditions of his limited permit in reference to a November 2008 DUI charge. Gomez, who lists a Baggett Mill Road address, is unemployed, according to investigators. Grady County Sheriff Harry Young asked the GBI to assist in the investigation, which began to focus on Gomez as a suspect. Further probing and questioning finally resulted in Gomez being charged mid-morning Wednesday with homicide by vehicle and felony leaving the scene of an accident on top of his original traffic charges. Gomez remains in custody in Grady Detention Center.
