Weather may impact plans for jamboree

Syrupmaker Band Director John Scanling and CHS Band Booster President Jeffrey Cape have their fingers crossed that the weather forecast improves for Saturday when for the first time ever Cairo will host the District 2 Georgia Music Educator Association’s Marching Band Jamboree.
The event will feature 14 high school marching bands including the Cairo High School Syrupmaker Marching Band.
A highlight of the event will be a performance by the Troy University “Sound of the South” Marching Band.
As The Messenger went to press Wednesday morning all plans were on go as scheduled. However, Director Scanling said plans may have to change according to the weather.
“If it begins raining after we’ve started on Saturday, we will move into the new gym. If on Friday the forecast is for a complete rain-out on Saturday it will be difficult to get bands to participate,” Scanling said.
The possibility of the Troy Band performing in the new gym or the auditorium are possibilities in the event of a rain-out, but Scanling said Tuesday he did not know what Troy officials were willing to do in the event of a rain-out.
The bands slated to perform and their performance-start-times are: Turner County – 10 a.m.; Dougherty County – 10:20 a.m.; Monroe – 10:40 a.m.; Brooks County – 11 a.m.; Worth County – 11:20 a.m.; Albany – 11:40 a.m.; Pelham – noon; Lee County – 12:20 p.m.; Thomasville – 12:40 p.m.; Tift County – 1 p.m.; Thomas County Central – 1:20 p.m.; Colquitt County – 1:40 p.m.; Crisp County – 2 p.m.; and Cairo – 2:20 p.m.
The “Sound of the South” will perform at 3 p.m.
Tickets for the Jamboree are $10 each and all proceeds will benefit the Syrupmaker Band. Tickets will be sold at the gate this Saturday.
“Hopefully the weather will improve and the jamboree can go on. We have a fantastic opportunity to raise a lot of money for our band program. I would hate to miss out on this opportunity,” Band Booster President Cape said.
